Fun with Inventory

So, I’ve been working on paring down my inventory recently. I know there’s people running around with 50,000+ items in their inventory, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how the hell they keep track of all of it.

Plus, I’ve got this very cool Inventory Server. It was expensive, but the web interface is really nice. Not perfect, but a major boon.

Problem is that when I first started using it I just dumped stuff in figuring I’d organize it later. Bad idea. I ended up with about 8000 items dumped in and couldn’t really find anything that I was looking for.

So, I spent a couple of days pulling everything out, dumping it in storage boxes, and it’s now all sitting in my inventory waiting for me to get to and put back into the servers but with a reasonable organization.

And then SL strikes me. I was moving a folder of stuff into the server, I’d already prepared a folder on the web interface to receive the items, when I suddenly discovered that I was missing a whole bunch of no-copy items I’d just put into my archive folders for storage in my no-copy archive boxes. Argh!

I did everything you’re supposed to when you discover inventory missing, relogged, wiped out my cache, wiped out my app support folder, the whole works. Nothing. So off I troop to file a ticket and hope that my items can be recovered. Inventory can and does just poof away from time to time, it’s a fact of SecondLife. If it weren’t, I might have figured out what happened sooner.

In order to put something in your inventory into an object rezzed in-world you can do too things. You can edit the object and drag into the contents tab, or you can control-drag onto the object itself. This is what I normally do. Oh, control click is what you use to add something to your current selection in your inventory window. So it turns out what I’d done was dragged all my no-copy items into my inventory server (and it doesn’t like no-copy items) by mistake. I really wish I’d noticed sooner, because I spent about an hour trying to get my stuff back… oh well.
